A Life Dedicated to Peace and Education
Sayadaw U Jotika was born to parents U Win Maung and Daw Ein Kunt in the village of Letpagyin, Nganzun township, Mandalay Region on 17th February, 1959 (10th Waxing Moon of Tabodwe, 1320ME). He became a novice at the age of 11 under the mentorship of U Nyana (Sayadaw of Mangala Theindaw Monastery). At the age of 13, he was sent to Mahajotikarama Monastery in Monywa to further study Pariyatti literature. At the age of 19 years and 9 months in 1340ME, U Jotika was ordained as a monk under the mentorship of Sayadaw Bhaddanta Nandobhasa, Patron Sayadaw of Oakkan Tawya Monastery.
In 1344ME, at the age of 24, he received the degree of ‘Saddhamodaya Dhammacariya’ having completed all three prescribed treatises. He also received the title ‘Sasanadhaja Dhammacariya’. After delivering Dhamma lectures for 7 years in Oakkan Tawya, U Jotika opened a Pariyatti Teaching Centre in 1990 (1352ME) at U-Yin Monastery. Having been entrusted by his elders, he started the teaching centre with 12 novices.
This vision ultimately gave rise to the University of Global Peace—a place of higher learning committed to cultivating wisdom, moral responsibility, and peace-oriented leadership for both local and international students. Currently, he has also been appointed the Rector of the University of Abhidhamma by the Most Venerable Sayardaw Nandamalabhivamsa.
